Oceania onshore trips overpriced

My wife and I have just returned from a cruise with Oceania on board their ship Nautica sailing from Rome to Athens. We were supposed to have 11 ports of call with 1 day at sea. Due to adverse weather [ seas choppy ] 5 of our ports were cancelled, including Amalfi,Sorrento, Portofino,Delos and Mykonos. Needless to say we were disappointed. We were taken , as an alternative, to Naples for Amalfi/Sorrento but when we coudn't land at Delos/ Mykonos the ship 'hot footed it' straight to our final destination of Athens arriving in the evening after an extra day at sea. So had a night in port of Piraeus when everything was shut. At Naples Oceania had offered to take us by bus to Sorrento for $50 each , we decided to take the train for 6 euros instead! Their excursions were grossly overpriced and their 'Pompei' trip for $109 per person apparently included a compulsory visit to a wood inlaying factory/shop. This would have eaten up half an hour of a 4 hour trip. The train cost us 3.70 euros with entrance fee of 11 euros. [35 minute train ride]
The wines were overpriced and all drinks had an 18% service charge.
On the plus side , the staff were excellent, food was very good, everything was very clean and tidy.
I realise that the weather is out of Oceania's control but I feel that they should have had a back up plan available for these situations. We did make many new friends onboard and, if the price was right, would travel with them again.

We agree in the main with these comments and feel that Ocania should ditch Destinations and find a more sensibly priced excursions organisation. They had very little knowledge of alternative transport such as local buses for people not wishing to spend so much on the excursions and the excursion we took in Santorini included a visit to a ceramics factory which took up time and was not wanted. Also the so called local guide for Genoa did not point out the Railway station from which it is a simple matter to get to Santa Margherita and from thence to Portofino. It was a similar tale at Naples where for a nominal sum they could have organised a bus to Sorrento far less than 50 dollars per head! Apart from the disappointmet of missing 5 ports of call and finding shops and museums closed in the bigger ports because of the national holiday, we did enjoy this our first cruise on this beautiful ship with the wonderful crew, fabulous food and we found the entertainment just perfect especially the wonderful Ray Solaire, Bruce Smirnoff, Emily Garth and the incredible violinist Artur Banasievic!! We are already looking for our next cruise with Oceania.

We loved the ship, the food was very good and the staff excellent. The shore excursions are overpriced, we were also on the Siena trip but having been before several times felt that the information offered was lacking. We were very disappointed in the missed ports, whilst we understand safety comes first, there should have been a contingency plan in place. Very disappointed in management's handling of the missed ports particularly when the visits to those ports was for us the reason Oceania was chosen above other cruise lines.

The on shore excursions were overpriced but most of the passengers were from America and Australia. These people , having come so far , were prepared to pay but the miserable English were not. THe cruise was brilliant and if you do your own thing on shore and don't drink alcohol then it was very good value for money. The nightly entertainment was brilliant and Ray Solaire was amazing.

I'm surprised at your comments about the "miserable english". Our holiday is important and we spend as much as we can afford on the cruise itself rather than pay,to quote yourself, the "overpriced" shore excursions. As we do our own thing ashore, the cancellation of so many ports was inexcusable. Except for Mykonos/Delos we thought the sea states were usual for that time of year and if the Captain said it was too rough to tender, those ports should not be advertised. We also differ in opinion about the entertainment and like many other passengers we spoke to, found it to be poor. We definitely do agree with you that the ship, food and crew were excellent.

OK, we English are not that miserable really when we are on holiday but I am now that I am back in Yorkshire with our miserable weather. I really agree with you on most things apart from the entertainment which we thought was very good. WE must have seen each other and might even have spoken. I wore the blue caribbean shirt at times. What's most important to me is that my wife enjoyed the cruise. Cheers to you both.
